This is one of my favorite jobs in South Laguna. The reason it’s one of my favorites is because it’s an original 1934 cottage.
This project is even more special because the home was built with a purpose to house the original members of the first Laguna Beach Yacht Rowing Club. The home itself was originally built as two homes side by side with dormer living on the second floor. The house burnt to the ground in the early ’80s and was remodeled poorly with bad design, finishes and style that didn’t do it justice. I was hired by a very passionate homeowner to restore it back to it’s former vintage glory of the 1930s.
Even though our improvements are extreme in nature, we are both improving what was done before and maintaining the vintage style. We are enlarging the living room by moving the original front of the house back three feet. The front room that is there now was actually a porch and a deck added in the ’80s and not part of the original 1934 construction. By taking advantage of widening the new living room in front, we are enlarging it so it is actually usable. We are scaling down the master bedroom, which used to be the original living room of the house on the left side so that it is more of a proper scale for the cottage.
Here are some pictures of the progress. The hole in the floor shows the original footings between the home plus the new footings with steel on it to move the wall back three feet.
